From the beginning, the parish of San Sebastián was not the great temple we know; due to fires and earthquakes, it has undergone many changes. No one knows exactly when it was first built, but there are records of its existence since the mid-17th century. The initial structure was small, roofed in tile, without many attractions, and remained so until the 1890s, when a large tower was added and other reforms were made.
In the year 62, an earthquake caused irreparable damage to the parish, and that was when the project to build the great church we have today was undertaken. The parish priest at that time was the priest Héctor Sánchez Herrera, better known for being the first owner of the famous "Piscinas del Padre'' (Father's Swimming Pools), who in search of financing the new temple of San Sebastián carried out a whole series of activities. It is said that one of these was the raffle for a Wolkswagen, the classic beetle of the time, and that one of the faithful, very encouraged to contribute to the cause, bought several tickets in the name of the Virgin of the Carmen... When on the day of the draw the name of the Blessed Mother won, Father Sanchez addressed everyone and said: Well, since the Virgin doesn't know how to drive, I won't keep the car!
Father Sanchez had his new car, and the parish was able to begin construction in the year 65. Almost nothing of the initial structure was preserved, the tower was removed and the architecture was completely changed. The current church is the largest temple in the entire Diocese of Cartago, to which Roldanillo belongs.
